Safety

There are so many fishes and sea creatures we encounter every time we dive. I will only talk about the ones that we frequently encounter.   One of the creatures I like to stay away from are eels.  They do bite, and they are very strong.  They are strong enough to bend spears.

Turtles get so big here that when they get scared, they can push you toward a sharp coral and hurt you.  The largest one I’ve seen was 6-foot wide.
Puffer fish are fish that blow-up like a balloon with spikes on them.  Some of them are poisonous.  Since I have a hard time telling, which ones are poisonous, I just stay away from all of them.

Risk Assessment

Before we dive, day or night, we perform a risk assessment and a safety briefing. There are many things that can happen in the middle of the ocean. A person can get a cramp, get sick, get a cut, etc. It is important to know what to do. Making a simple rule, such as, making sure that before you go back to the shore, ensure that you tell at least one person from the group. This will prevent the group from thinking that you are lost or something bad happened to you.

 

Guest Divers

We often have guest divers, so we are really particular about this because of safety concerns.  When we do have guest divers, we conduct safety briefings.  We go over hand signals, dos and don’ts, and actions should there be an emergency.
