Equipment

The ocean is cold this time of the year in Hawaii; therefore, we all wear a wetsuit with a hood.  This will not only protect us from the cold, but also from sharp corals or from jellyfish.  We also wear the long fins used for free diving.  You want to be able to propel very fast especially if you are 30 feet under the ocean, and you are running out of air.  Wearing a wetsuit make a person buoyant, so we also wear weight belts with the appropriate weights.  Using a weight belt will help you dive down and stay down.  We also wear a snorkel and mask.  There is nothing more annoying than a mask that is constantly fogging.  We use potato as anti-fog, and it works great.  Of course, you cannot forget the gloves.  You will definitely appreciate them when you have to handle a fish.  Most of us also carry a dive knife; it’s a very handy tool.

I use a spear gun.   I missed a very large fish using a three-prong once, and I promised myself that I will not ever miss a large fish like that again.  Since then, I have been using a spear gun.  Spear guns are expensive though.  A good quality spear gun cost anywhere between $300 dollars to $700 dollars.  My spear gun cost $375.
